First-and-Then Visual Aids are simple but effective tools to support task sequencing and behavioral expectations for individuals who benefit from structured visual cues. These aids present two steps at a time, clearly representing what activity comes first and what follows next. They are especially beneficial for individuals with autism, intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD), or those who may struggle with transitions or completing tasks independently. Hook-and-loop (Velcro) can be used to easily switch between pre-determined choices.

Examples of Use:

  • Daily Routines: “First Brush Teeth, Then Read a Book” to help with bedtime transitions.
  • Task Completion: “First Put Away Toys, Then Play Outside” to encourage task compliance.
  • Classroom Activities: “First Finish Worksheet, Then Go to Recess” for structured academic routines.
